International Biology Olympiad

One of the most prestigious and largest biology competitions for high schoolers. Talented young biologists will gather together during this week, discuss, connect and attend a set of challenging theoretical and practical exams.

Competition Details:

The competition will last for around a week, and 2 sections, theoretical and practical section exams will be conducted meanwhile. Each of the sections account for 50% of the total grade. 

    1. Every delegation, representing their nation, is made up of 4 students who are the top competitors in their nation’s own national biology olympiads.

    2. Each delegation is required to have 2 faculty advisors.

    3. Age: must be under 20 years old by the first of July during the year of competition.

    4. Participants must be enrolled in high school and must not have started their learning in college. 

    5. One participant could attend only IBO twice, maximum. 

    • This tests your understanding, processing, and application of biological knowledge. It usually consists of two exams, each lasting 3 hours. 

    • The questions are designed to assess data analysis, critical thinking, and inductive reasoning, not just rote memorization. 

    • They typically require you to evaluate statements as true or false. The syllabus covers seven key areas with the following weightings.

    • The topics include:

      1. Animal anatomy and physiology

      2. Cell biology

      3. Genetics and evolution

      4. Plant anatomy and physiology

      5. Ecology

      6. Biosystematics

      7. Ethology (Animal behaviour)

    • This evaluates your ability to solve biological problems using laboratory skills and methods . It consists of four exams, each lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes . The typical modules are :

      1. Biomedical Sciences

      2. Cell and Molecular Biology

      3. Ecology and Systematics

      4. Microbiology

    • These exams test skills like observation, measurement, data analysis, hypothesis formulation, and experimental design

    1. Gold Medal: Awarded to the top 10% of students .

    2. Silver Medal: Awarded to the next 20% of students .

    3. Bronze Medal: Awarded to the following 30% of students .

    4. Certificate of Merit: The remaining participants often receive a certificate of merit

USA Biology Olympiad (USABO):

Deliverables & Timeline:

Round 1: Open Exam (February). A 50-minute, 50-question multiple-choice exam. Only the top 500 scorers (~top 10%) advance.

Round 2: Semi-Final (April). A 120-minute exam that includes more complex question formats like multiple-select, short answer, and essays.

Round 3: National Finals (May/June). The top 20 semi-finalists are invited to a 12-day intensive training camp. This includes 10 days of instruction followed by rigorous testing, consisting of a 3-hour theoretical exam and a 6-hour practical exam.

Canadian Biology Olympiad (CBO):

Deliverables & Timeline:

Round 1: Laboratory Skills Portfolio. You will complete three specified labs at your school under supervision and submit a digital record of your work. This has an early-year deadline (around January).

Round 2: Theoretical Skills Test. This is typically the University of Toronto National Biology Competition (U of T NBC), a 50-question multiple-choice exam. The CBO national exam itself is usually held online in April.

Selection and Camp: The top four students are selected and then attend a 5-day training camp before the IBO to refine their laboratory skills.
