HMMT(Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament)
Descriptions:
One of the largest and most prestigious math competitions that draws around 1000 students from around the globe, including top scorers from national and international math olympiads.
-
Each test includes 10 short answer questions, and the total is 50 minutes long.
The November tournament includes 2 individual tests: the first is the general round with questions ranging from all mathematics topics in high school, and the other is the themed round with questions surrounding a selected theme.
The difficulty of questions is between mid-AMC and upper-AIME difficulty.
The February tournament includes 3 individual tests: the first is the Algebra test that covers high school algebra and number theory, the second is the Geometry test that covers Euclidean geometry, and the last is the Combinatorics test that covers high school combinatorics.
The February problems are typically more challenging, with the difficulty being national Olympics level.
The weighting for each question is different, and it is indicated on the exam when students receive it at the tournament. The weight for each question is a real number between 3 and 10, determined by a post-weight function.
-
The team round is also 10 questions but with 60 minutes, and it must be completed by all members of the team. The weighting will be specified on the test paper.
The November tournament team round is short answer-based, with the difficulty between mid-AMC to uper-AIME level.
The February tournament team round is proof-based, and this is the only round where teams can earn partial marks. The difficulty for February is relatively great; some problems are comparable to the hardest problems on national olympiads.
-
The Guts around is 80 minutes, including 36 short answer questions covering all sorts of different topics with different difficulties and weights.
The November tournament has questions divided into sets of 3, and the February tournament has questions divided into sets of 4.
All teams will gather at the lecture hall together, and each team will send a runner to pick up the first set of questions at an assigned station when signaled.
Whenever the team has answers for one problem set, the runner may bring the answers to the station and pick up the next set, and students don’t need to finish all problems on a set to move on.
The grading is immediate, and scores are posted and updated in real time.
