HCSSiM (Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics)

HCSSiM is a highly intense program that offers an immersive dive into college level math. It was founded in 1971 and aims to not simply accumulate mathematical knowledge, but to put effort into the very process of doing mathematics, building proofs from the ground up.

For the first three weeks, students will attend workshops led by a college professor and several undergraduate or graduate assistants.
A broad set of topics is covered, including: set theory, number theory, group theory, and graph theory.
During the second half of the program, focus is shifted as students are empowered to choose their own path. They select one "maxi-course" and two "mini-courses" to explore specific areas in greater depth.
In the past, course offerings included Probability, Topology, Dynamics and Fractals, Theoretical Computer Science, and 4-Dimensional Geometry.

Students will have at least 7 hours each day learning math, including the workshops in the morning, group discussions, and problem sessions. What to do during the afternoon is generally up to students, and occasionally, there will be activities.
